Goals from Berbatov and Scholes cancel out Pavlyuchenko's early strike and put Manchester United into the draw for the fifth round of the FA cup.

Manchester United 2 - 1 Tottenham was the result of this fourth round FA cup tie and was an accurate reflection of the performances of the two sides. Manchester United's increasing injury list meant they couldn't afford to rest any players, so Carrick and Berbatov started against their old club.

Goal Pavlyuchenko: Manchester United 0 - 1 Tottenham

Tottenham started the game strongly and within five minutes they made an unlikely breakthrough when Pavlyuchenko managed to steal a yard on Vidic and glance the ball past a flat-footed Ben Foster. This early set-back meant that Manchester United would have to get a goal back before half-time to keep the pressure on Tottenham as a Manchester United 2 - 1 Tottenham result didn't look likely.

Goal Scholes: Manchester United 1 - 1 Tottenham

The goal was a wake-up call and Manchester United started to create some decent chances, only being thwarted by some last-ditch Tottenham defending. The Manchester United pressure told when a Carrick passed a corner to Scholes, who was standing unmarked outside the area. His shot got a deflection off Huddlestone and passed Alnwick to get Manchester United back level.

Goal Berbatov: Manchester United 2 - 1 Tottenham

Manchester United pressed on, intent on scoring again before half-time and a few minutes later Manchester United took the lead. A first-time defence splitting pass from Carrick found Berbatov who controlled the ball before rifling it beyond Alnwick. Berbatov had scored against his old club, but his celebration was sombre and respectful to the Tottenham fans.

Half-time: Manchester United 2 - 1 Tottenham

Manchester United took the lead into half-time, but it was Tottenham who started the second-half better, though without creating any clear-cut chances. Manchester United managed to create some decent openings but without getting a further goal, seemingly content with a Manchester United 2 - 1 Tottenham result.

Full-time: Manchester United 2 - 1 Tottenham

Despite some late penalty appeals from the Tottenham players, Manchester United 2 - 1 Tottenham was the result and means that Manchester United go through to the next round of the FA cup. Sir Alex Ferguson will no doubt be delighted to still be in all competitions and not to have to play a replay, but unhappy with injuries to Fabio Da Silva and Welbeck putting a further strain on his squad. The draw for the next round is tomorrow evening.

Manchester United: Foster, Fabio (Eckersley), Vidic, Neville, O'Shea, Ronaldo (Tosic), Scholes, Carrick, Welbeck (Fletcher), Tevez, Berbatov

Tottenham: Alnwick, Bale (Taarabat), Dawson, Gunter, Corluka, Assou-Ekotto, Bentley (Defoe), Huddlestone, Zokora, Modric (Giovani), Pavlyuchenko
