As Danny Dichio's future remains uncertain, TFC fans plan to honor one of the most popular players in franchise history

For fans of the Major League Soccer franchise Toronto FC (also known as the TFC or simply The Reds), forward Danny Dichio has evolved from history maker to team icon. Since scoring the first goal in franchise history against the Chicago Fire in the 2007 inaugural season, his profile has continued to grow as one of the most popular players in the organization. Through his aggressive style of play and his dedication to the team, he quickly earned the respect and praise of the home town crowd. His presence has earned him a cult like following amongst hardcore fans at BMO Field, and though plagued with injuries through the 2009 season, Dichio has continued to remain a fan favorite.

Dichio’s Final Season with TFC?

Although there is still some speculation surrounding his future, it now appears likely that the 2009 season will be Dichio’s last as a player for the club (he had previously announced his intention to retire at the end of the 2009 season). With some fans feeling that perhaps the franchise has not fully appreciated his contributions of late, plans are underway to show Dichio just what he has meant to them during the past 3 years.

As a tribute, TFC supporters clubs the Red Patch Boys and U-Sector will be leading the charge to honor the popular player. Already known for their banners, songs and extreme dedication to the team, these loyal supporters are not likely to disappoint.

Campaign Planned to Celebrate Dichio’s Career with TFC

On September 12th, when the Toronto FC hosts the Colorado Rapids at BMO Field, the supporters will unofficially launch the beginning of the Danny Dichio Appreciation Campaign. Through a continued build up over the last few remaining games of the 2009 season, the campaign to showcase the popular player will climax on the final regular season home game of the year when TFC hosts Real Salt Lake. Plans are in the early stages to create a huge banner to encompass the south end of the stadium, a sight that will be sure to excite loyal supporters. The match is scheduled to take place on October 17th, a day the Red Patch Boys are declaring as “Danny Dichio Appreciation Day”.

The organizers are calling on all TFC supporters to get involved by showing their continued enthusiasm and support for the franchise and for Danny Dichio. They want to ensure that the legendary player they have come to respect and admire has the opportunity to properly feel the appreciation from the home town crowd. If one thing is for certain, the organizers behind the campaign are planning to give this iconic player a send off to remember.
