» schultzy - The crazy world of Argentinian Soccerball

After catching the recent Newells Old Boys - Velez Sarsfield match in the Copa Libertadores, I know full well why the Argentinian FA don't hold a cup competition - the fans are bonkers. To hold a knockout competition might prove more trouble than it's worth! Admittedly the referee was shocking, but numerous pitch invasions and running battles on the terraces resulted in 16 minues injury time.

By the way, did anyone catch Lyon-St Etienne the other week? The goal celebrations were priceless. One goal was celebrated in front of the dug outs, the players spraying each other with silly string. For another, Cris was determined to chest-slam Fred into the turf. Anyone know if these can be seen on the web anywhere?

Sadly in the UK we don't get the Libertadores live. In fact we get it very late -- highlights about a week later at 3am.

I watched that Lyon match and for the entire 90 minutes I was transfixed by Lyon's team having sprayed their hair and faces red, white and blue.

Seeing as St Etienne are Lyon's great local rivals it was pretty disrespectful to play the match painted like clowns. When Gomis hit the bar after about 90 seconds I thought St Etienne might make them pay. But after that it was all one-way traffic ending up 4-0 to Les Gones, as Lyon are nicknamed (and a prize to anyone who can tell me what that means. I emailed the club and heard nothing back -- so much for the entente cordiale).

The moral victory was St Etienne's though as Lyon's squad really did look like berks.

Here's a picture of them celebrating the first goal:

If there's one thing we don't have enough of in the Premiership it's foreign players.

The other is rehearsed goal celebrations.

That link looks ker-azy. Like a fox.
