Is it only English players that have this metatarsal bone?!?! Have there been any other cases of players from other countries suffering from this at such important times - if not, what's wrong with our players!?

I wonder if not having Rooney at the world cup takes the pressure off the team a bit? I get the feeling most of England expects less now he's unlikely to be around..

I'm all up for trying to take positives from a situation, but are you mad? Yes, expectations have been dampened by WR's likely absence, but ultimately that's hardly something to be cheering about. And given the majority of players seem to think WR was essential to any successful tilt at the World Cup, it's hardly going to inspire them to greater things knowing he's out.

Maybe Sven could reduce the pressure further by not taking Robinson, Lampard, Terry and Owen. That would really help dampen any thoughts we had of coming back with the trophy.

It's always great to hear you Europeans wax lyrical about the soccer. Just why are there so many foot injuries these days? Is it the mudbaths you guys play on, a influx of tough tackling South Americans or the new style soccer shoes causing the problems? I hope your man Roon makes the World Cup though - he looks like a bruiser but plays like a dream.

Rooney's breaks have both been the result of awkward landings. The simple solution is to give him a tiny parachute - when he has lost his balance, he can deploy the chute and elegantly drift back to Earth, as the nation breathes a sigh of relief.

Danny Murphy (a former metatarsal victim himself) is blaming the pitches according to the BBC Sport website -- they're too firm. He also suggests Rooney should try sleeping in an oxygen tent. That's what they told Michael Jackson and look what happened to him.

In any case, it appears that Rooney's entire foot is due to fall off at some point before our World Cup opener as Sven now says he has more than one fracture. Oh dear...
